Overheard

"Author Kurt Vonnegut died. He wrote such novels as "Slaughter-house Five" and "Cat's Cradle," none of which I have read."

--- The news, as read on an Alabama radio station yesterday morning.

The only thing I *thought* I'd ever read of Kurt Vonnegut was that speech 'Advice', I think it was titled, that he did as a graduation commencement speech - you know, the one about wearing sunscreen! I always really liked it and found it rather profound with the best kind of simplicity. But, alas, I recently also read that he did not write it at all, just stole it from Mary Schmich, (who I had also never heard of at that time) who had published it in one of her columns that year. You'd think somewhere along the way someone would have mentioned that SOMEONE else wrote that... Think she'll actually start getting credited for it now that Vonnegut's dead? lol

"Sunscreen" was attributed to Mr. Vonnegut, he never claimed to have written it. Check out www.snopes.com/quotes/vonnegut.htm

Cheers,
Elizabeth
