Downloading a free book is a terrific way to test the waters. I was surprised to learn last year that the romance genre has grown. Now there are subgenres such as romance - suspense, romance - paranormal and historical romance. Spending an afternoon with a group of romance novelists opened my mind to a genre that is often belittled.
